1Ten Umpire Ten Commandments
- Focus! Lock in on your duties with laser attention. Know your mechanics and your responsibilities, What you should be looking at and for,
- Hustle! There is no better way to earn respect than to work hard on the field. Show that you are out there to give each team your best and earn your pay.
- Approachable! Treat coaches, players, and your partners with respect at all times. Be approachable and open minded. Never discuss your partner with either team's players or coaches.
- Teamwork - NEVER EVER SHOW UP YOUR PARTNER. work together, it looks terrible for umps to be arguing or criticizing their partner. Be firm in your decision making, but know when to go for help. If you are 100% (1000%) sure, stick with it. We want to get the calls right When you are sorting out the calls do not allow the coaches to be close enough to listen. Once you reach an agreement bring both coaches together for the verdict. A violation of this can be subject to a fine.
- Know the rules and proper mechanics. You cannot get plays correct if you do not know how to enforce them or how to position yourself to call them.
- Strong pre-game plate meeting. Have a thorough pre game plate meeting and stress sportsmanship at all times.
- Always be on time! Arrive 30 minutes before game time and have a pre-game with your partner. Text the UIC upon arrival in the parking lot. Get the games going on time. You want your money on time start the games on time please.
- Patience- Do not rush your call take a slight pause before you make the call .
- Common Sense - Use common sense and don't be so picky with your calls Some things you let go
- Appearance . Look like a professional. And you will be given instant respect.
